Memorable Interfaith Wedding Ceremonies Performed By Cantor
-
In her 26 years as clergy, Cantor Ellie Shaffer has officiated and co-officiated at hundreds of interfaith wedding ceremonies. For mixed-faith couples, she conducts a personalized wedding service unique to each couple, often interspersed with lines of Hebrew, and using text, song, poems, and readings. Traditional Jewish practices such as the sharing of wine by bride and groom and the subsequent breaking of the wine glass, the use of the wedding canopy (Chupah), wedding contract (Ketubah), and the exchange of vows and rings are frequently included. Interfaith couples often request that the ceremony include the lighting of the Unity Candle, symbolically merging both families into one, along with an ecumenical reading from scriptures.
Cantor Ellie, as she is affectionately called, is Cantor Emerita of Temple Shalom in Levitown, Pennsylvania, after ten years of service there, preceded by ten years at Temple Beth Torah in northeast Philadelphia. Her duties included presiding at all liturgical services, training Bar-Bat Mitzvah students in Torah-reading, conducting/directing both the adult and children's choirs, teaching music to all grades in the Sunday School, and officiating at weddings within the synagogue aegis. Prior to her years at Beth Torah, the Cantor served at Congregation Beth Or in Springhouse, PA, and at M'Kor Shalom in Cherry Hill, NJ.
Cantor Ellie usually officiates alone, but welcomes collaboration with any officiant whom the bride and groom choose, providing that person is open to an ecumenical ceremony. She will suggest the names and contact information of outstanding priests and ministers with whom she has happily officiated, upon request.
